1. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Planetary magnetism is a fundamental and yet imperfectly understood process that is related to the deep internal structure and thermal evolution of planets. Computer modeling is an important tool to help advance our understanding of the thermal and magnetic histories and futures of rocky planets in our solar system and beyond. UTIG seeks a postdoctoral scholar who can contribute to ongoing work to better characterize the physical and chemical conditions required to drive and sustain core dynamos inside rocky planets and/or to help investigate what remanent crustal magnetization can tell us about the magnetic histories of these bodies.

4. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

Conduct research to develop novel computational approaches on earthquake source characterization using full waveform inversion or combination of similar inversion methodologies. The goal is to be able to minimize earthquake source location uncertainty using existing methods, to estimate source intensity and directionality characteristics, and to develop new methods that may require the joint estimation of additional subsurface geophysical parameters. To comparatively assess the effectiveness of different methods in earthquake source characterization, when the earth model is heterogeneous and isotropic/anisotropic, and for different subsurface conditions. The results could be integrated in TexNet’s operational process for earthquake location and a regional time-dependent seismic hazard model estimating approaches for risk mitigation.

5. Postdoctoral Position

Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:

One or two Postdoctoral researcher positions are available to work with Dr. Kelly Dorgan at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute in Port Aransas, TX, starting in January, 2025 (negotiable). Research in the lab integrates ecology, biomechanics (including engineering theory and methods), and invertebrate behavior, morphology and physiology with engineering theory and methods, including development of new instrumentation.

Postdoc research will be focused on understanding the mechanisms underlying bioturbation and/or on characterizing the impacts of infauna on deep sea sediment stability. Responsibilities may involve lab experiments and field work on sediments and burrowing animals. The positions are for 1-3 years, with extension past the first year dependent on performance and funding.
