5. Fully Funded PhD Position in causality, machine learning and computational social science
Summary of PhD Program:
A central challenge of the social sciences is that society is a complex system due to its intricate interdependencies. For instance, individuals’ lives are shaped by exposures and interactions within and across social domains such as workplaces and neighborhoods. While this complexity is acknowledged in theory, much of the empirical work tends to simplify it. This risks leading to an overly simplified description of the social world. Recent developments in machine learning (ML) paired with rich population data, however, offer a path forward for the computational social sciences. The aim of this project is to make use of and further develop the most recent ML methods for analyzing population registers.
Application Deadline: December 10, 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in visualization with a focus on computational social science
Summary of PhD Program:
The focus of this advertised PhD position and the corresponding research project will be on designing and studying visualizations specifically targeting the needs and opportunities of computational social science research. There are a range of opportunities for new visualization directions, including novel approaches to visualizing uncertainty, new techniques for incorporating domain knowledge into visualizations, making complex simulations transparent and interpretable, and engaging the public in social science research through visualization. The visualization research will be informed by critical, feminist, and design-oriented perspectives.
