The Department of Developmental Psychology at the Institute of Psychology at the University of Bern is looking to fill a position as a doctoral student for a total of 3 years starting on February 1, 2025 (or by arrangement). The holder of the position will independently carry out and evaluate empirical projects in kindergartens and primary schools that deal with the cognitive and metacognitive development of children and publish the results. One focus will be on children’s ability to recognize their own strengths and weaknesses, and any errors and uncertainties that may have occurred when completing a task (metacognitive monitoring, error monitoring).

You will be part of our young team working on the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) Starting Grant project entitled “Mechanisms of peripheral vision in complex decision making” (TMSGI1_211220 / 1). In the first phase, we focus on mechanisms behind the use of peripheral vision in experimentally controlled settings in our Virtual Reality laboratory. In the second phase, we investigate if these mechanisms can be trained to enhance decision-making processes in football and transferred to other domains like car driving.

Summary of PhD Program:
The contribution of the PhD project towards above mentioned goal is to compile climate data products (weather stations, reanalyses data sets and satellite products) and apply geostatistical and/or machine learning methods to generate long-term daily meteorological fields. The PhD student will analyse the data and use them, together with other partners, for crop modelling under present and future climate scenarios in order to evaluate water and nutrient management options.

Our labs aim to develop sophisticated and autologous in vitro co-culture models using primary human cells that can be used for the advanced in vitro testing of inhalable pollutants. In the scope of this PhD project, we will investigate the potential toxicity and immune modulation of the highly relevant airborne polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). To this end, a personalised in vitro triple cell co-culture model will be established, with primary human differentiated nasal epithelial cells (HNEpCs), blood monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) and dendritic cells (MDDC) from the same individual, mimicking the upper respiratory tract.

The PhD student will join the research team of the SNSF Starting Grant Project, “TraIL: Tracing Labour in Islamicate Legal Traditions.” The project began in March 2024 and will run for 60 months. TraIL aims to provide cutting-edge research on the legal history of labour in Islamicate societies, diversifying our understanding of labour through textual and digital methods of analysis. The focus will be on the intersection of labour and gender in Islamic legal traditions across a long historical span (from the 10th to the 20th century). The geographical focus will be on Egypt and the region of Bilād al-Shām (Greater Syria, which corresponds to modern Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine).
