1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Occupant-centric flexibility quantification and dispatch
Summary of PhD Program:
In the framework of MSCA DN CoDEF project, we are looking for a motivated and experienced PhD candidate to perform occupant-centric flexibility analysis. A particular focus lies on the quantification and dispatch of flexibility to support energy system operation. Challenges encompass – among others -, modeling physical systems and stochastic human behaviors. Historical data in the Empa’s NEST demonstrator and its inhouse digital twin will be utilized to quantification and dispatch flexibility. The candidate shall translate his/her research ideas to tackle these challenges, in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and external scientific and industry partners.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in guiding and confining mechanical wave energy in 3D chiral metamaterials
Summary of PhD Program:
Applications are invited from suitable qualified candidates for a full time, 36 months fixed-term position, as a Doctoral Candidate (DC) on the MetacMed Doctoral Network at Empa. This position is DC09, which is one of 12 DCs being recruited as a part of a European-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (DN) on Acoustic and mechanical metamaterials for biomedical and energy harvesting applications– ‘MetacMed’.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in field of elastomer-based sensors and actuators with piezoelectric ceramic fillers
Summary of PhD Program:
For a fundamental project, funded by Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), we are looking for a highly motivated student with a strong background in electrospinning of ceramic materials and soft polymer composites with functional properties (e.g. piezoelectric, magnetic ect.). This project focus on the synthesis of ceramic fillers using electrospinning method and the embedding in elastomers. The focus of the project is the development of elastomers with piezoelectric properties using 3D printing methods. The project is in collaboration with EPFL.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in X-ray based 3D virtual histopathology for studying metastases evolution in colorectal cancer
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD research will be on the development and application of novel X-ray imaging based 3D virtual histopathology methods for studying the evolution of metastasis formation in colorectal cancer. In this truly interdisciplinary and multi-center project, the PhD student will work in strong collaboration with other PhD students and researchers from the University of Bern, University of Florence and HES-SO. By extending histopathology imaging to 3D, we aim to analyze and understand better tumor spread mechanisms in colorectal cancer by combining 2D and 3D structural information.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Polymeric Fiber Biomaterials: Microfluidic wet spinning of hydrogel-coated functional sutures
Summary of PhD Program:
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain. The project aims to develop functional sutures by microfluidic wet spinning and demonstrate their potential application in soft tissue surgeries with ex vivo models.
