Summary of PhD Program:
The overarching aim of the Sakamoto Group is to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying cellular energy sensing and restoration of metabolic balance. We study how post-translational modifications (e.g., reversible phosphorylation) and allosteric regulation of signaling proteins/metabolic enzymes control cellular energy balance and how dysfunctions of such molecular processes lead to cardiometabolic diseases. Our goal is to identify and validate drug candidates that ameliorate energetic imbalance in cardiometabolic disorders. We take multidisciplinary approaches, collaborate with renowned national/international experts and support development of early career scientists.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Early Detection of Infection in PRRS-free herds
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project is part of a new GUDP-project starting 1 January 2025 with the title “Early Detection of Infection in PRRS-free herds”. The aim of the project is to develop methods for early detection of new PRRS infections in herds that are free of this disease. This is key to achieving freedom from the disease in Denmark as the national reduction plan is rolled out and we approach a large number of negative herds. Today, this type of surveillance is only carried out by practising veterinarians taking 20 blood samples per herd, which is costly, time-consuming and does not have the necessary high sensitivity and ability to quickly detect infected herds.

The research project will focus on the role of choroid plexus in cerebrospinal fluid secretion and the dysregulation of transport proteins in animal models of disease. The overarching aim of the research project (and the PhD traineeship) is to develop and test new methods for creating synthetic health datasets that can be used to support projects in precision medicine, health IT, and AI methods development. Synthetic health datasets are generated datasets that should capture the complex patterns of real, restricted-access clinical datasets via deep learning, yet pose minimal risk to patient privacy. The focus of the PhD project will be to study fracture and damage formation of ice sheets and how it induces structural weaknesses that can facilitate fast flow and precondition ice shelves for disintegration, and potentially causing irreversible grounding line retreats. The project will bne to develop and implement continuum formulations of stress-based poro-damage dynamics and hydrofracturing, using new e.g. phase field methods. The broader focus of the PhD is the development and implementation of novel statistical methods for the analyses of DNA sequencing data. Of specific relevance to this Ph.D. position are methods for estimating genetic distance and full phylogenetic trees while taking into account molecular evolution substitution models. Secondly, the hosting centre, the CAEG Center of Excellence, is devoted to the generation of ancient environmental genomes as part of a diverse suite of projects spanning million-year-old material from extreme arctic environments to DNA sequencing data from lost civilizations in southeast Asia. A damaged or ill skin can produce serious social stigma and personal trauma and activate mechanisms of exclusion. Engaging with these issues, the project’s aim is to advance a more nuanced understanding of skin health focusing on the crucial relations between scientific, commercial and everyday skin practices. The EXPOSING project examines how scandals emerge and progress over time and across media, as citizens no longer passively witness scandals through mass media but take an active role by posting their opinions online and becoming a driving force in exposing and judging moral transgressions. The project aims to show how citizens’ participation in digital publics affects the ways in which scandals develop, and how scandals, as a result of being increasingly citizen-driven, become sites for public communication of concern. 18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Human physiology, Environmental Health and Climate Change
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful PhD candidate will work closely with Lars Nybo, Professor in Human Physiology, and will be responsible for developing and collecting physiological data (primarily cardiovascular parameters of relevance for heat tolerance and its importance for resilience to orthostatic stress and maintainance of cognitive function). The work will include echo-cardiographis assessment of heart function. In addition the candidate will have the change to work with methodologies to assess heat tolerance, obtain human biological material (e.g. skin biopsies and blood sampling to evaluate effects of UV-exposure and risk-taking behaviors such as ”sun-seeking”). The candidate will also be expected to participate in field and lab studies in Greece in collaboration with Professor Andreas Flouris.

Summary of PhD Program:
The project examines what poorer people in Kumasi (Ghana) do to get clean water, and whether this depends on which part of the city they live in. It focuses on three types of urban sites that represent different configurations of residents and businesses, and different social histories and dynamics i: 1. the downtown older areas of the city where many residents are originally migrants, 2. areas that are both industrial and residential and where poorer people compete with water intensive industries and 3. sites on the edge of the city where long term residents compete with middle class people that buy land at the outskirts of the city. The study of these sites employs a combination of ethnographic and archival methods and draws from a range of disciplinary backgrounds.
