The PhD position is connected to the research project ‘GreenPath: Greenland stable mercury isotopes: from Holocene sources to modern time-series and pathways’ recently funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark and will run for 3 years (link). 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantitative Genetics: Novel breeding goals and optimized breeding schemes for beef cattle breeds to be used on dairy cows
Summary of PhD Program:
This Ph.D. project will contribute to the definition of cutting-edge breeding goals for beef breeds used in Beef x Dairy production systems and to the optimization of breeding schemes to maximize selection response for the different traits in focus. The impact of milk production on climate and environment is significant, with high greenhouse gas emissions and nutrient runoff. Studies suggest that grazing is a potent mitigation tool for reducing enteric methane emissions from dairy cows. Studies on grazing systems, grazing management, and grazing in combination with other methane mitigating strategies are needed to enable quantification of the carbon footprint of milk production.
