Summary of PhD Program:

In this position you will be affiliated with a project within the field of infant and child psychology under the supervision of Associate Professor Francesco Margoni (main supervisor) and Associate Professor Lilla Magyari (co-supervisor). You will work at the Stavanger Baby and Child Lab on a research project named ‘Discovering the foundations of politics in human mind’ aiming to explain how children understand the social world around them. In the project we will address the question of how and when children start to show a sensitivity to concepts like individual freedom and social equality, concepts that are fundamental for the adult social and political thinking.

Summary of PhD Program:

The main objective of this project is to advance the understanding of CO2 transport mechanisms in fractured geological media, enhance predictive models, and develop effective control strategies for managing CO2 leakage pathways. This is done through a series of experimental and numerical simulations that can determine the potential interaction during or after storage and help to understand how the CO2 plume migrates in geological porous media.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geophysical Techniques for CO2 and Energy Storage

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD is associated to the work package 1 of the Centre for Sustainable Utilization of Energy Resources on the Norwegian Shelf (NCS2030). The primary motivation behind this PhD project is to address critical challenges in the sustainable management of subsurface resources, particularly in the context of energy and CO2 storage. As the world transitions towards cleaner energy solutions and seeks to reduce CO2 emissions associated with hydrocarbon production, there is a growing need to develop safe and effective methods for the storage of CO2, and energy in near field environments, including depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs, shallow aquifers and salt sequences.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Material Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The project aims to design molecular-based ordered structures for efficient CO2 capture and storage. The PhD candidate will use atomistic modeling to, among other things, study surface-adsorbed aromatic macrocycles, especially cyclophanes, which will be functionalized with chemical functions to create suitable adsorption sites for CO2. Graphene, graphene oxide and related substrates as well as silicon oxide-based surfaces will be investigated as supports for these macromolecules. Later this will be extended to the third dimension. Research questions include both modifications of the substrate, the 2D adsorbates of the macrocycles and 3D structures.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analysis of Archaeological Wood and/or Charcoal

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD candidate will therefore work to develop a method to identify driftwood in the archaeological record, allowing us to better understand its past use. This will involve working with a primary material of archaeological charcoal and/or wood from western and northern Norway and the North Atlantic islands (the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Greenland). The candidate will be jointly supervised by Dr. Dawn Elise Mooney (UiS) and Dr. María Martín-Seijo at the Spanish Research Council’s Institute for Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT-CSIC). The PhD Fellow will be affiliated with the project “Neutron Scattering and Atomistic Simulations for a SUPERior Understanding of SUPERionic Conduction (SUPER2)” funded by the Norwegian Research Council. In this project, scientists at the University of Stavanger, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC in the UK), the University College London (UCL in the UK) will work together to develop a new methodology to gain a deeper understanding of ionic diffusion in a broad range of advanced functional materials. This methodology relies on combining polarized quasielastic neutron scattering (pQENS), inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and molecular dynamics with machine-learned potentials to gain insights into ion conduction processes crucial to the performance of many existing and emerging green technologies, from batteries to fuel cells to thermoelectric generators.
