3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics to improve resource efficiency
Summary of PhD Program:
In order to increase resource and energy efficiency in production, the Fraunhofer ITWM develops prediction models on the basis of which process optimisations are carried out. These models are calibrated by adapting model parameters to measurement data. The quality of this adjustment is a decisive factor for the quality of the prediction models. The quality of the fit depends not only on the measurement accuracy, but also on the design of the measurements. Typically, this experimental design task is addressed by linearisation in the model parameters. In process engineering and biotechnology, however, one often has to deal with strongly non-linear relationships.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics to increase the resilience of production processes
Summary of PhD Program:
The simulation of production processes can make a decisive contribution to increasing energy and resource efficiency. When using simulations in practice, it must be taken into account that influencing variables such as energy and raw material prices are subject to stochastic fluctuations. To protect against such fluctuations, additional storage and buffers must be created, which lead to increased investment and operating costs. Model-based, interactive decision support tools can highlight the interdependencies between increased resilience and increased costs and lead to the most balanced compromises possible.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Analog Design and Validation of High-Voltage-DAC for Electro-Optic Devices
Summary of PhD Program:
Electro-optic modulators (EOMs) play an important role in influencing photons in opto-integrated systems. Electro-optic modulators work on the basis of Pockels effect which modifies the refractive index of certain optical waveguides thereby influencing the photon carried by it. As a part of the data acquisition and control unit of a mixed signal electro-optical integrated circuit (IC) a High Voltage-Digital Analog Converter (HV-DAC) is required. The high voltage, high speed and scalability are key challenges to control an EOM array. Fraunhofer IPMS has been developing IP cores as well as complete digital and analog ASICs for many years. In this work, HV-DAC architectures will be explored and compared to an existing high speed HV-DAC topology.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Integration and characterization of ferroelectric memory devices 1
Summary of PhD Program:
As a PhD student you will work together with our team and industry partner to transfer these technologies into existing technology nodes. Since ferroelectricity in HfO2 occurs only in a metastable orthorhombic phase, whose stability range depends on a variety of parameters, such as layer thickness, dopant content and type, layer stresses and thermal post-treatment which need to be optimized. In this work, the dependence of these process parameters on the ferroelectric properties such as remanent polarization, cycle endurance and microvariability will be investigated and correlated with physical properties of the films such as composition and crystallographic phase.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Materials Chemistry: Functionalizing Medical Silks
Summary of PhD Program:
Are you someone with a passion for science and who enjoys working across scientific interfaces? Are you ambitious, self-motivated with the skills to develop new ideas and utilise chemistry to functionalise biomaterials? Then this PhD is an ideal opportunity for you. For in vivo applications medical materials must meet stringent requirements including biocompatibility, biodegradability and appropriate mechanical properties. Processing biomaterials under mild conditions to preserve their biological activity is critical. Few materials meet all these requirements, however the biopolymer silk is emerging as a strong contender.
