1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Intelligent Energy Management Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
The researchers working at the newly established Professorship of Energy Management Technologies are focusing on the design and evaluation of innovative data- and machine learning-based systems to integrate more renewable energy into our energy systems and make energy use more efficient. We develop new optimization methods, machine learning algorithms, and prototypical systems controlling complex energy systems such as buildings, electricity distribution grids, and thermal systems for a sustainable future. These systems coordinate distributed renewable generation like solar and wind, flexible loads like heat pumps and electric vehicles, and distributed energy storage like stationary batteries and hydrogen storage to maximize energy efficiency while keeping the grid reliable and secure.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in water-based in-space propulsion
Summary of PhD Program:
The EIC-funded research project ‘Solar for Ice-to-Thrust’ (S4I2T), with TUM in the leading role, aspires to advance (self )sustainable space mobility and consequently develop and demonstrate a water-based propulsion system and infrastructure. Goals of the project are lab demonstrations of an end to end in-situ-resource-utilisation (ISRU) process (turning icy regolith into thrust) and an AI-based autonomous docking and water transfer of two CubeSats. These worldwide unique demonstrations shall pave the way for a more efficient, cost-effective and eco-friendly space mobility infrastructure and enable economically viable in-orbit servicing such as spacecraft assembly, refilling or active debris removal.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Aircraft Design Software Engineering
Summary of PhD Program:
How may novel technologies influence new aircraft configurations to enable a sustainable aviation system? The quest for climate-friendly aviation will lead to radically different future aircraft. To find promising combinations of technologies by using adequate analysis and simulation tools, the TUM Chair of Aircraft Design is engaged in the software development of the open source cross-university UNICADO framework. As we strive to push the boundaries of aerodynamics, fuel efficiency, and overall performance while ensuring easily extendable software, the demand for innovative software solutions becomes increasingly crucial.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Immunology
Summary of PhD Program:
T helper cells represent a heterogeneous population of immune cells that are critical for host defense and, if dysregulated, for pathologies such as autoimmunity and allergy. T cell responses take place in peripheral tissues. Yet, insights into their identity and regulation stem almost exclusively from investigations of circulating blood, which comprises only 2% of the total human T cell population. Accordingly, current immunomodulatory drugs act systemically, but lack tissue specificity. Despite progress in the temporary suppression of chronic inflammatory diseases, they still fail to be curative. This project aims to address this unmet medical need by generating fundamental insights into the dynamic compartmentalisation of human tissue resident T helper cells across space and time.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Professorship for Global Health
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position is offered within the EU-funded research project “Disentangling and Preventing Economic Violence against Women (ECOVI)”. Violence against women is a violation of fundamental human rights and substantially compromises women’s health, wellbeing, and empowerment. Globally, more than one in four women experience physical and/or sexual violence by a partner in their lives. However, existing research has so far neglected an important dimension of intimate partner violence (IPV): economic abuse.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in molecular evolution
Summary of PhD Program:
RNA and positively charged peptides cluster together to form coacervate droplets, which support internal reactions involving RNA and ribozymes. Coacervate compartments can locally enrich and protect catalytically active molecules and are open to molecular exchange with the environment. Exchange with the environment could have supplied precursors for compartment growth and the evolution of more complex molecules by coacervate-mediated reactions. We will use microfluidic devices to supply substrates for RNA polymerization in coacervates and track the development of their phenotypes over time by microscopy. Characterizing the feedback between ribozyme activity and coacervate properties will help us implement compartment growth and replication of genetic material bringing us closer to a system that is capable of Darwinian evolution.
