1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbial Interaction with Deep Oceanic Crust

Summary of PhD Program:

The primary objective is to quantify the environmental impact of microbial and/or fungal activity in the oceanic crust. This project will advance our understanding through an interdisciplinary approach combining micro-fluidics, with genomics, atomic-scale mineral dissolution measurements, biogeochemical rate modelling, high resolution 3D-imaging, isotope labelling and integrated geobiological data analysis. Analytical approaches implemented can include a multitude of advanced molecular, microscopically and geochemical techniques and protocols such as microbial genomics, atomic force microscopy combined with vertical scanning interferometry (ATM-VSI), x-ray diffraction (XRD).

Application Deadline: 31st January 2025

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Element Fluxes in Archean seafloor hydrothermal systems

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD position is dedicated to increase our understanding of the consequences of Archean seawater chemistry on subsurface reactions and geochemical fluxes in Archean seafloor hydrothermal system, in particular low-temperature systems with evidence for early microbial activity. The project will focus on outcrop and drill core samples from the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa and Eswatini, and will combine geochemical analyses with stable isotope analyses and petrographic work. Work on natural samples will be complemented with geochemical modeling to assess impacts of Archean seawater chemistry on subsurface reactions and fluid compositions.

Application Deadline: 31st January 2025

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in early Archean terrestrial sulfur cycle

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD position is dedicated to increase our understanding of the early Archean terrestrial sulfur cycle. The project will primarily focus on samples from the 3.2 Ga Moodies Group in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa that contain silicified sulfate concretions and have been obtained through scientific drilling in the ICDP project Barberton Archean Surface Environments (BASE). Work will include the interpretation of CT and µCT data to understand mineralogical relations and concretion growth processes, bulk and SIMS multiple sulfur isotope analyses of sulfate and sulfide minerals in the concretions and surrounding sedimentary rocks, and integration of field observations and geochemical data to build a holistic model for the sulfur cycle in early shallow marine to subaerial settings.
