1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Environment Modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

Our “Professional Service Robots – outdoor” group develops mobile outdoor robots for agriculture and logistics processes that are used in various (industrial) environments. One development focus is on robot cognition, for example to navigate in complex environments and perform complex processes reliably. As a software developer for feature detection and environment modeling, your task will be to develop and implement algorithms and network designs (deep learning). These should enable our robots to efficiently and accurately detect and interpret their environment based on sensor data such as LiDAR, RADAR and camera data.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Micro- and Nanostructured Optics

Summary of PhD Program:

The generation and replication of optical micro- and nanostructures is the basis for modern complex optical systems. The technology available at Fraunhofer IOF – such as grayscale lithography, electron beam lithography, reactive ion etching, step & repeat replication, wafer-scale fabrication, or even molding techniques – allows the fabrication and characterization of high-end micro- and nanooptical elements of the highest resolution on up to 12″ substrates and also on curved surfaces.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics to improve resource efficiency

Summary of PhD Program:

In order to increase resource and energy efficiency in production, the Fraunhofer ITWM develops prediction models on the basis of which process optimisations are carried out. These models are calibrated by adapting model parameters to measurement data. The quality of this adjustment is a decisive factor for the quality of the prediction models. The quality of the fit depends not only on the measurement accuracy, but also on the design of the measurements.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematics to increase the resilience of production processes

Summary of PhD Program:

The simulation of production processes can make a decisive contribution to increasing energy and resource efficiency. When using simulations in practice, it must be taken into account that influencing variables such as energy and raw material prices are subject to stochastic fluctuations. To protect against such fluctuations, additional storage and buffers must be created, which lead to increased investment and operating costs.
