6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Statistics and Machine Learning Theory

Summary of PhD Program:

Current statistical methodology still reflects the use-context of its first development in the 1920s: methods assume that researchers make all important analysis choices before gathering the data. In modern data science age, however, data-driven paradigms have become dominant: many measurements are gathered simultaneously and it is often natural to pursue research questions that were not of obvious interest a priori. Looking at the data is scientifically sensible to do, but the problem is that current statistical methods cannot handle this behaviour well. What is needed for this, is the right mathematical framework, that gives the necessary error control guarantees without all the old restrictive assumptions.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in design for recycling and effective/secure sealing

Summary of PhD Program:

Well defined recyclability and re-design challenges of the traditional multi-material films are driving packaging industry away from conventional barrier materials towards polyolefin-based mono-material films that stand out with their easier recyclability. Although these films mainly consists of layers of the same type of polymer, they can still contain various barrier coatings, EVOH, PVOH, Acrylic, SiOx, AlOx, metalized layers, insoluble fillers and additives within a specific limit to achieve required functionality. These impurities still limits the full circularity of mono-material films since quality and quantity of recycled products drop over time due to changing melt-flow index and processability, accelerating thermal-oxidative degradation.

17. Fully Funded PhD Position in microfluidics for health

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, you will work on the production and characterization of novel phospholipid-coated monodisperse microbubbles with a shell functionalized with antibodies that can bind to diseased tissue [1]. When these bubbles are driven by ultrasound, they’ll start to volumetrically oscillate and thereby generate a strong echo. Thus, antibody-functionalized microbubbles in combination with ultrasound imaging can be used for disease diagnosis. Additionally, the oscillating bubbles can create pores in the cell membrane and vascular wall such that they can also be used for drug delivery.

18. Fully Funded PhD Position in Algorithmic Energy Trading

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD research will be performed as part of an industry funded project on algorithmic energy trading. The goal of this project is to conceive, develop, and evaluate self-learning algorithms that are able to act autonomously on short-term power markets. 19. Fully Funded PhD Position in patient participation and citizen science in breast cancer prediction research

Summary of PhD Program:

More than 2,300 women are diagnosed with DCIS each year. In some women, the abnormal cells in the breast will develop into breast cancer. It is currently unclear which women this is the case for. The standard treatment consists of a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy, which often results in overtreatment. The aim is to be able to offer personalized treatment, in which a wait-and-see attitude is possible. For this, it is very important to be able to determine which treatment is most suitable for which woman. First and foremost, this is important for the women who are affected by this. In addition, it is important to improve the quality of care and quality of life for them. This may also save healthcare costs.
