2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microscopic Modelling of Nuclear Spin Hyperpolarisation
Summary of PhD Program:
The doctoral researcher position is a part of the Research Council of Finland research project “Spin hyperpolarisation processes by multiscale simulations” led by professor Juha Vaara. By nuclear spin hyperpolarisation one means techniques by which the signal intensity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is enhanced by orders of magnitude. This results from molecular-level exchange, collision and dissipation processes that lead a non-thermal equilibrium occupation of the nuclear spin states, which is then employed in materials characterisation and medical diagnostics by NMR.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Stream biodiversity under change
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for a highly motivated early-career researcher with a background in community ecology, freshwater ecology or limnology for a project that uses several long-term data sets, allowing up to 40-year perspective to stream biodiversity change. We will also use shorter (up to 4 years) data sets on ecosystem process rates to relate inter-annual variation in ecosystem processes to variation in benthic biodiversity and abiotic variables in 30 streams spanning a gradient from near-pristine to heavily impacted sites. These unique data sets help us evaluate if boreal stream biodiversity has responded positively to water quality improvement and whether this ‘management credit’ overshadows climatic and land-use debts.
Application Deadline: 08.Nov.2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in biogeography/ ecology of freshwater plants
Summary of PhD Program:
We are looking for one (1) talented and highly motivated research-oriented person to carry out doctoral studies in “Unraveling the effects of contemporary and historical changes in climate and land use on freshwater biodiversity in high-latitude regions of Europe and North America” project. The objective of the project is to answer the following questions: (i) is land-use intensification a stronger driver of change than changing climate in explaining historical freshwater plant diversity and distribution?
Application Deadline: 10.Nov.2024
9. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in microstructural design of advanced high-strength steels for enhanced fatigue resistance

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mosses, nature’s purifier, for reducing land use-derived metal and nutrient loads in catchments (PUREWA)
Summary of PhD Program:
The Kvantum Institute spearhead project PUREWA aims to study and develop passive, moss-based water purification for reducing metal and nutrient leakage caused by land use change. Clean water is a crucially important natural resource. However, the aquatic ecosystems are threatened by multiple stressors due to climate change and increasing land use. As a result, the amount of nutrients and metals increase in the catchments, which slows down the organic matter decomposition and disrupts the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems.
