The goal of this position is to investigate the impact of ocean observations on hurricane predictions in the Gulf of Mexico. The appointee will join the ocean modeling team at the Physical Oceanography Division of the NOAA Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). The incumbent is expected to: (1) Contribute to improvements in the data assimilation system configuration; (2) Perform ocean and coupled Observing System Experiments (OSEs) to assess the impact of ocean observations in the Gulf of Mexico on the ocean and on hurricane forecasts. The position is supported by a large National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) initiative aimed at investigating the Gulf of Mexico dynamics through observations and modeling.

The postdoc will play a crucial role in implementing and interpreting environmental DNA (eDNA) experiments to characterize fish diversity across a vertical depth gradient using high-throughput sequencing data as well as organize and help lead a field expedition in Puerto Rico. We seek an experienced and productive researcher to join our group and participate in a project to assess the potential effects of climate change on marine mammals and sea turtles in the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. The incumbent will use survey data on marine mammal and sea turtle abundance and spatial distribution collected since the early 1990s along with past climate data to develop species distribution models examining decadal changes in habitats and animal distribution. They will work with climate scientists to obtain appropriate retrospective data and climate projections appropriate for evaluating regional changes in oceanographic and environmental conditions. These models will be used to predict future changes in distribution based upon climate model predictions of ocean habitat.
