2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Direct Numerical Simulation of Electrochemical Bubbles

Summary of PhD Program:

In the transition to a green economy, hydrogen is called to play a central role to decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors. To this aim, water electrolysis is the key technology enabling the conversion of (green) electricity into hydrogen. However, this pivotal process still suffers from low conversion efficiencies. One of the chief causes of such inefficiencies is the sub-optimal bubble release from the electrodes, which block the reaction sites. In this project we want to develop new numerical techniques that allow advancing our understanding on the fundamental physics ruling bubble detachment in gas-evolving electrodes.

Summary of PhD Program:

In this particular PhD project we are going investigate digital modulation of radar waveforms to achieve separability of transmitted waveforms keeping large dynamic range of radar system and good resolution in range and Doppler domains. The project focuses on the experimental investigation of floating offshore wind turbines aerodynamics and aeroelasticity. Summary of PhD Program:

The transition of airflow from laminar to turbulent state is a major contributor to aerodynamic drag and consequently aircraft emissions. Often, unavoidable modifications of the wing surface, such as panel joints or skin deformations decrease the extent of laminar airflow by promoting transition. However, through our research, we showed that this is not always the case. In a recent breakthrough, our team discovered the “Delft Laminar Hump”, a passive smooth surface modification. The proof-of-concept experiments showed the capability of the Hump to create an unprecedented delay of transition, effectively increasing the extent of laminar flow.
