Application Deadline: November 15, 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Security Politics
Summary of PhD Program:
Our research is both theoretically rigorous and empirically grounded, utilizing a wide range of methodologies. We focus on evolving threats to states and societies, as well as how key actors organize to address these challenges. Our sustained inquiry into political violence, security paradigms, and the institutions, processes, and policies aimed at reducing insecurity shapes everything we do.
Application Deadline: December 1, 2024
5. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Global History
Summary of PhD Program:
Elena Valdameri’s project will contribute to the costs of the successful applicant’s research visits to the relevant archives in India, PRC, Switzerland, the UK and the USA, as well as travel expenses for conferences. The professorship ‘History of the Modern World’ offers an inspiring research environment with an international team of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, and regular exchanges with scholars from around the world. Successful applicants will have full access to a modern infrastructure in one of the world’s leading research universities located in the heart of Europe. The salary is based on the ETH standards and regulations.
Application Deadline: 31 October 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in friction in architected materials
Summary of PhD Program:
The Computational Mechanics of Building Materials (CMBM) aims to understand and predict mechanical failure in materials and structures. By combining numerical modeling tools with tailored laboratory experiments and theoretical models, we create a holistic perspective on mechanical failure, bridging the gap between material behavior at the small scale and principles governing catastrophic failure at the system level. CMBM is a highly interdisciplinary and international research team.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Labour Economics
Summary of PhD Program:
The successful candidate(s) will conduct academic research within the project “Labor Market Inequality in Modern Labour Markets” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The project is led by Dr. Michael Siegenthaler and will last four years. Using large-scale register data linked to online employer review and survey data from Switzerland and Germany, the main research objectives of this project are to understand the importance of non-wage work arrangements for workers and firms – and the implications for labour market inequality – in Germany and Switzerland.
Application Deadline: November 15, 2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in directed evolution of material-making microbes
Summary of PhD Program:
Utilize a droplet microfluidic platform for the directed evolution of functional microorganisms and investigate genotype-phenotype correlations of selected strains compared to native species. The project will involve the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices, the directed evolution and sorting of microorganisms under selective pressure, as well as the characterization of the biological activity and the genetic analysis of selected microbial strains.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Technology and AI for Individual and Organisational Resilience
Summary of PhD Program:
In the upcoming project, we will examine how technology and AI can be leveraged to strengthen individual and organisational resilience across a variety of fields (e.g., business, education etc.). To do so, we will examine how both detection (e.g., use of data) and intervention (i.e., application of technology) can support individual (i.e., cognitive performance, stress, learning etc.) and organisational (i.e., staff turnover, employee satisfaction etc.) outcomes. This will be achieved through primary and secondary data collection in both controlled and field settings. The successful candidate will shape projects and research questions within this overarching scope.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
10. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Architecture and Technology
Summary of PhD Program:
The A&T Doctoral Programme is ETH Zurich’s interdisciplinary educational platform committed to training scholars in research and teaching of technology in architecture. The programme is offered and managed collaboratively by the chairs of the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA). The work of the ITA chairs assimilates many diverse aspects of employing science, technology and engineering in architecture, including computational design of buildings and structures, building processes and systems, digital and robotic construction and fabrication, and many others. For more information about our institute, please consult the ITA website, and check out the ten years of ITA video.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rock Mechanics
Summary of PhD Program:
In this project, you will use the state-of-the-art laboratory and numerical modelling infrastructure available to the Chair of Engineering Geology to develop, test and apply a new methodology to investigate the behaviour of jointed rock. This will combine state-of-the-art mechanical tests with recent developments in additive manufacturing. You will then use numerical modelling to develop, validate and test the newly developed methodology. Finally, you will perform scaled experiments of engineering geology systems to make fundamental insights into processes such as rock slope failure and rock fracture propagation in jointed rock.
