5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computer and Systems Sciences, with focus on Distributed Systems
Summary of PhD Program:
Artificial Intelligence in Distributed Systems: Our society is heavily dependent on distributed systems and services in which a continuum of computing resources (from resource intensive clouds or HPCs to resource constrained IoT) play a central role in data generation, controlling communications, computation, real-time decision making and storage. Working with different capabilities and characteristics of resources poses several challenges including resource allocation, task scheduling, and system optimization, which often depends on static or predefined rules, causing inefficiencies and suboptimal performance. However, artificial intelligence can be incorporated into these systems in order for them to adapt to dynamically changing workloads, environmental conditions, and user requirements.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Public Health Sciences
Summary of PhD Program:
The doctoral project aims to understand disability-related health inequalities using Swedish register data. The doctoral project will take a broad approach to disability and health inequalities over the life-course and across generations. The doctoral project will involve the development of a general framework to study disability-related health inequalities. Based on this framework, quantitative studies will be conducted. These studies will use epidemiological design and statistical modelling and will be based on Swedish national social and health registers. The doctoral project will advance the theoretical and empirical understanding of disability-related health inequalities.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fashion Studies
Summary of PhD Program:
Fashion Studies at Stockholm University is an interdisciplinary field that explores miscellaneous concepts and approaches to the study of fashion from both aesthetic and material perspectives. The aesthetic dimension focuses on the cultural meanings of clothing and style through visual and textual representations. The materiality of fashion is seen through the commercial development of textiles and accessories throughout history. Additionally, luxury studies constitute another research area in tandem with the growing international academic interest in the field. For the time being teaching and research in Fashion Studies include fashion and dress history, fashion and gender, fashion as an industry, fashion representations in media, consumer culture theory, fashion and sustainability and marketing and identity practices.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Chemical Physics: Quantum Chemical Studies of Photochemical Pathways
Summary of PhD Program:
The photochemistry of energy-rich azides (R-N=N=N) shows a great diversity in organic synthesis and in the important field of click chemistry, which was awarded the Nobel prize in Chemistry 2022. The nature of the populated excited state opens pathways to different reaction intermediates and the rate of formation of photoproducts can be detected in time-resolved experiments. However, the precise determination of short-lived species and how they are formed often remains elusive and ambiguous. The work will focus on the development of ab initio calculations of x-ray spectra for the study of the electronic structure and photo-induced processes. Prediction of pathways of photoinduced processes in solution is a demanding task which requires accurate description of solvent interactions and evolution and transitions involving different electronic states. You will work both with existing start-of-the art software and develop code.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Superconducting Electronics
Summary of PhD Program:
The current project is focused on the development of future superconducting quantum electronics using vortex-based superconducting components. Superconductivity and the Josephson effect are macroscopic quantum phenomena that allow the creation of quantum devices at a conventional micro/nanometer scale, easily achievable by modern micro nano-fabrication techniques. Superconducting cryo-electronics is needed not only for the development of a quantum computer but also for the next generation of a digital exaflop supercomputer and energy and-time-efficient neuromorphic computers for artificial intelligence. At present, one of the largest obstacles towards the future development of superconducting electronics is associated with the difficulty of its miniaturization: practical applications require nano-scale devices compatible with very-large-scale integration (VLSI).

14. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theoretical Physics: Developing universal measures of quantum complexity
Summary of PhD Program:
Complexity is a fundamental concept that quantifies the difficulty of accomplishing a particular task, given a specific set of allowed, simple operations and a procedure to achieve it. As such, it is an important part of many fields from mathematics to computer science. Surprisingly, physics still lacks a precise definition of quantum complexity and providing it is one of the most urgent problems at the cutting-edge of quantum theory and quantum gravity. The PhD position within the ERC Consolidator project “Quantum Complexity from Quantum Field Theories to Quantum Gravity” will aim to fill this gap. Working under mentorship of the PI (Pawel Caputa) and a senior postdoc, the goal of the project will be to develop universal measures of quantum complexity for many-body systems, quantum field theories and holography.

15. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Information Theory and Quantum Optics
Summary of PhD Program:
We welcome applications for a PhD position in quantum information theory and quantum optics at Fysikum at Stockholm University. Quantum information theory provides a framework for describing and quantifying genuinely quantum phenomena, such as coherence and entanglement. This theory has been instrumental in modelling a wide array of quantum systems and platforms, facilitating the development of powerful quantum technologies. Nevertheless, many fundamental questions remain unanswered, including the mechanisms driving the quantum-to-classical transition and the nature of the gravitational field generated by a superposed quantum system. A promising approach to addressing these questions involves studying quantum systems with masses significantly larger than those of single atoms. These systems can often be described as mechanical resonators in the quantum regime, with examples ranging from levitated silica or diamond nanoparticles to clamped membranes and microscopic mirrors.
