The Dixon Lab at University of Basel is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student to study neuro-immune interactions in cancer. The role of intra-tumoral neurons is complex and still not fully understood. While some studies suggest they play a critical role in tumor progression and metastasis, others report that they may contribute to anti-tumor immunity. Our lab is dedicated to understanding the innervation landscape of peripheral tumors and its role in immuno-oncology.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cartilage and osteochondral bioprinting for joint restoration
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to develop cartilage and osteochondral using nasal chondrocytes (cells in clinical use for repairing cartilage defects) and Melt electrowriting (MEW, i.e., an approach that combines electrospinning with 3D printing). In particular, the effect of scaffold architecture on nasal chondrocyte differentiation will be assessed. Additionally, the project aims to evaluate the regenerative capacity of the manufactured grafts in vivo (i.e., temporomandibular joint defect model in animals).

Summary of PhD Program:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health concern. In recent decades, pan-resistant bacteria have emerged, rendering commonly available antibiotics ineffective. Consequently, many pivotal advancements in modern medicine are now under threat. As the development of new antimicrobials stagnates, there is an urgent need for alternative strategies to identify clinically effective treatments. In this project, we aim to develop a novel strategy for the treatment of antibiotic-resistant pulmonary infections via taking advantage of nanoparticle and mRNA technologies.

Summary of PhD Program:
Today’s information storage and computation technologies face challenges in power consumption, data handling efficiency, and storage density. Our project aims to develop proof-of-concept novel magnetic nanodevices using spin waves for energy-efficient computation. Spin waves transfer information through spin angular momentum, avoiding dissipative charge transport. Using spin waves for information processing offers key advantages, including Joule-heating-free propagation, making them ideal for low-power computing devices.
