3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Remote Sensing

Summary of PhD Program:

Our project develops new methods for remote sensing of forest above-ground biomass. We will use satellite laser sensors to provide regional estimates of biomass and its change 2003–2027 for the entire European boreal forest zone. Satellite lasers can directly measure tree heights and forest canopy densities. Statistical and physically-based models are used to convert these measurements into accurate estimates of biomass. Special attention is paid to model transferability, which guarantees that the predictions are reliable for different types of forests.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in Wood Extractives Group

Summary of PhD Program:

Buildup of the secondary-form wood extractives decreases the pulp mill’s productivity as they partly form different carry-over pitch (or scale) components at the fiberline, leading to excessive chemical consumption and even unscheduled shut down of the mill. The native-form wood extractives (prior to the fiberline) have been well researched for decades, but there is not enough scientific data to investigate the reaction mechanisms behind its secondary form (in the fiberline).
