2. Fully Funded PhD Position in electrophoresis in advanced configurations

Summary of PhD Program:

In the LCP group of Ghent University (lcp.elis.ugent.be) we have a long history of modelling and testing electrophoretic motion of particles in polar and nonpolar liquids. Our goals are to understand the underlying physical mechanisms and to develop or improve new technologies based on this knowledge, such as electronic ink displays, smart windows, manipulation of particles at the microscale and electrodeposition. In recent experiments and prototypes we noticed that phenomena occur that cannot be explained by the one-dimensional models that we developed and commonly use.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Structural Engineering and Building Materials

Summary of PhD Program:

Within the CARBCOMN project, this PhD researcher will be involved in employment of computational methods to form find compression dominant structural geometries; in definition and design of a manufacturing procedure to optimize topology, shape and size of the blocks and in structural testing of discrete blocks and assemblages. Moreover, this PhD student will be involved in the print path design to realize the construction blocks through extrusion-based 3D printing which will also include digital post-treatment of the joints and assembly of the blocks. Finally, this PhD student will integrate all the above in building designs and compare the performance of the system to traditional technological solutions.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in electromechanics

Summary of PhD Program:

The investigation will focus on potential substitutional materials to PTFE and PTFE-containing polymer sliding machine elements and tribotechnical components. This reasearch aims to investigate the abrasive wear behavior, including wear micro-mechanisms, surface and micro-geometry changes along with other tribological properties such as friction in contact. Additionally, the study will explore wear particle generation and embedding characteristics. The research will be conducted under various pressure-velocity conditions, providing a basis for comparison. The goal is to offer comprehensive insights for effective polymer sliding element and tribotechnical component selection, as well as engineering design.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Information Technology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD fits within the recently launched imec Health Mission, a strategic research track aiming to advance the discovery and development of novel therapeutics over the next 10 years. IDLab Ghent is a key partner in the Health Mission, and leads the first mission project ADAPT (for “Affinity and Developability through AI for Protein Therapeutics”). ADAPT aims to develop AI-based models to design and optimize antibodies and nanobodies with high binding affinity and optimal developability properties, in a collaboration with several imec research groups and key industrial partners from the Ghent area specialized in nanobody technology.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Geology

Summary of PhD Program:

As a PhD student performing fundamental research on this project, your task will be to design and perform new experiments to study the physics of fluid flows in porous materials. Specifically, you will investigate two-phase flow (e.g. simultaneous flow of water and air) and/or viscoelastic flow (flows of liquids that change their viscosity depending on the flow). You will characterize the different flow regimes that can occur due to their highly non-linear and fluctuating nature, and will investigate how this correlates to the pore geometry in real porous materials. To do this, you will apply novel 3D X-ray imaging techniques and will contribute to their development led by other researchers on this project. The work is meant to lead to a PhD degree after 4 years.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position

Summary of PhD Program:

In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.
