1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multi-Objective Optimization in Imaging Optics
Summary of PhD Program:
Imaging optics involves the design and optimization of imaging systems (cameras, telescopes, …) to most accurately capture and reproduce an image. This is especially relevant for high-interest research topics like optical metrology in chip production. The design process in imaging optics is inherently multi-objective, involving different competing performance measures. This could be on a more systematic level the interplay of quality, cost and manufacturability but also image quality itself can be described by competing performance measures.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Foundation Models for Embedded and Embodied AI in Autonomous Driving
Summary of PhD Program:
This project is part of a large program in collaboration with many academic and industrial partners, including major OEMs in Europe, with a significant impact on the future of safe AD deployment. You will be building foundation models for both embedded and embodied AI, focusing on LLM-guided sparsity and learning agents. Your work will involve language-based navigation, training, labeling (and data curation in general), as well as developing more intuitive LLM-based active learning approaches. Ultimately, you will work towards LLM-based scenario descriptions for actor generation in simulations.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Modeling of microstructure evolution and failure of aluminum under neutron load
Summary of PhD Program:
Materials ageing and structural integrity of research reactors Many of the existing nuclear research reactors in Europe are very old (>60 years operation) and only few initiatives are taken to partially replace this capacity. Until new reactors come to operation, continued operation of these existing reactors is required to maintain the EU excellence in development and qualification of nuclear materials for advanced reactor concepts and to maintain the supply of medical isotopes. However, there is limited understanding of damage mechanisms and lack of data on research reactor materials at relevant operating conditions for long term operation of research reactors. In addition, there is a shortage of surveillance specimens for extending the operational life for some research reactors.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Advanced Atomization for Metal Powder Production
Summary of PhD Program:
The production of metal powders for PM and AM requires high sphericity, uniform particle distribution, and optimal size characteristics. Molten metal atomization is the key process that transforms molten material into fine, spherical particles using high-velocity gas streams. This project aims to develop an experimentally validated CFD model for this process, advancing the understanding of the physical and chemical mechanisms involved in close-coupled gas atomization (CCGA).The overall objective of this study is the development of the experimentally validated CFD model for molten metal atomization.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Predictive human-based bone in vitro models for drug & biomaterial screening
Summary of PhD Program:
Components of our immune system are present in every organ to defend us against diseases and to help restore and maintain tissue homeostasis. Studies in experimental animals have shown that different immune components also play an integral role in bone homeostasis, regeneration, and diseases. Although the importance of immunity in bone biology has been widely recognized, only a few studies have committed to translating this knowledge into predictive human-based in vitro models for drug and biomaterial screening.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Generative AI in Design Education
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral candidate to join our research team as part of a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) doctoral network: AlignAI. The AlignAI doctoral network aims to train doctoral candidates to develop, evaluate, and engage with Large Language Models (LLMs). It focuses on aligning these models with human values to ensure their development and deployment are ethically sound and socially beneficial. By integrating expertise from social sciences, humanities, and technical disciplines, the project will address critical issues such as explainability and fairness, thereby ensuring LLMs contribute positively to education, mental health, and news consumption.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Developing a User-centric AI evaluation framework for LLMs
Summary of PhD Program:
The doctoral candidate in this position will develop and test a user-centric AI evaluation framework that triangulates subjective metrics such as perceived transparency, understandability, fairness and cognitive explainability (mental models), with objective measures of explanation and model quality. Quantitative and qualitative user studies will be developed iteratively throughout the project within the three use cases of the AlignAI consortium: Education, positive health and online news consumption.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine learning on large databases for interventional cardiac PCI treatment
Summary of PhD Program:
The time delay between medically relevant innovations and their establishment in medical practice is significant. Reducing this lag is a constant challenge for the health care system. Already today, a large amount of data is generated and stored daily in routine clinical practice and research. If we succeed in integrating and evaluating this comprehensive digital documentation of medical data, this promises a far-reaching gain in knowledge for medical science as well as an immediate benefit for those affected or at risk in the future. New technologies make it possible to link routine clinical parameters with the human genome, the activity of human genes in tissue (transcriptome and proteome), or metabolites in the bloodstream (metabolome) in functional networks.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in AI for Monitoring and Prognostics of Power Electronics Converters
Summary of PhD Program:
Power electronics converters (PECs) are systems that process electric power in various applications, including renewable energy generation and power grid interconnections, high-tech systems, electric vehicles, industrial automation and more. As they play mission-critical roles for the systems in which they are embedded, it is crucial to consider and carefully examine PECs reliability during their design phase as well as during their operation – a necessity that is nowadays well understood in both the academic and industrial communities.

11. Fully Funded PhD Position in Carbon Membranes Development
Summary of PhD Program:
Carbon membranes are developed via carbonization of a thermosetting polymer film. The tunability of carbon membrane structure for specific separations relies on several key factors: the careful selection of polymer precursors, which determine the functional groups and pore architecture, as well as the carbonization temperature and choice of sweep gas during the process.

12. Fully Funded PhD Position in impact of outdoor lighting (and darkness) at cultural heritage sites
Summary of PhD Program:
This PhD position is part of a EU funded project called ‘The Art of Darkness as Cultural Heritage of Urban Landscape’. The cultural, aesthetic and sustainability values of darkness should be considered in lighting design, especially for cultural heritage sites. The Art of Darkness project will realize and evaluate five pilot projects in five different countries through a multidisciplinary and participatory approach that emphasizes lighting design not as mere technological, but a cultural design task. In doing so, the Art of Darkness, adopts the principles of New Bauhaus: Together, sustainable, and beautiful; reflecting a design process that has inclusivity, community involvement, green transitions, and an integration of science and the arts at its core.

13. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Micro-Mechanics of ‘Green Steels’
Summary of PhD Program:
PLEDGE is a challenging research project funded by the Dutch government and the Materials Innovation Institute (M2i) to understand the consequences of ‘green’ steel making (i) using a hydrogen-based production process and (ii) with an increased usage of recycled (scrap) material. The mechanical properties of any steel rely strongly on second-phase particles in the metallic microstructure, yet, the amount and distribution of second-phase particles can vary considerably in green steels.
