1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Sciences: Next-generation vegetation modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

You will innovate towards a next-generation vegetation model by combining improved ecosystem process understanding and first principles, numerical modelling, and model-data integration methods. Your work will extend the model developed and maintained in our group, integrating novel theory development by the LEMONTREE project partners. You will apply the model for testing novel theory against different observational data, including satellite remote sensing observations, ecosystem flux data, and ecosystem manipulation experiments.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Psychology / Neuroscience

Summary of PhD Program:

The working group led by Prof. Dr. Jessica Peter (University Clinic for Geriatric Psychiatry and Psychotherapy) is researching how memory processes change in old age or in the case of illness and which interventions are suitable to counteract this. The research group uses modern and innovative methods of cognitive neuroscience (e.g. 7T imaging, non-invasive brain stimulation). In the current project, non-invasive brain stimulation is used in younger and older people with depression to change the interpretation bias.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Tissue Engineering using Silk for Intervertebral Disc Repair

Summary of PhD Program:

Low back pain (LBP) is a severe pathology which affects about 80% of Western societies. The LBP is often associated with degenerated intervertebral discs (IVD) of the spine. Currently, no ideal solutions are available to restore a degenerated disc and its functions. The selected candidate will be integrated into an internationally competitive research environment, combining experimental and theoretical methods to test original scientific hypotheses and to develop innovative implant technology to “rescue” or repair the degenerated intervertebral disc.

Application Deadline: August 30, 2024

5. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in Behavioural Ecology

Summary of PhD Program:

Two fully funded, 4-year PhD positions are available in the Division Behavioural Ecology (https://www.behav.iee.unibe.ch/) led by Prof. Eva Ringler at the University of Bern, Switzerland. The positions are part of the research project “Facilitators and constraints of behavioural flexibility” financed by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). In this project, we will investigate flexibility from a behavioural, hormonal, and neuronal perspective.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Climate Sciences: Next-generation vegetation modelling

Summary of PhD Program:

Our group for Geocomputation and Earth Observation develops new model and data integration methods to gain a mechanistic understanding of biogeochemical cycling in ecosystems, water-carbon coupling, and forest responses to climate change. We are hosted at the Institute of Geography, University of Bern, and work at the intersection of Earth system science, ecophysiology, ecology, applied statistics, and high-performance computing. Within the Virtual Earth Systems Research Insitute project LEMONTREE (Land Ecosystem Models based On New Theory, obseRvations, and ExperimEnts), we are recruiting a PhD student.

8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Machine Learning for Medical Wearable Data

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to develop deep learning methods to analyse wearable signals. The project will focus on both method development and clinical application. In the methodological part, the candidate will develop ML techniques to learn from large-scale wearable datasets (continuous glucose monitoring devices and smartwatches), with a specific focus on the development of foundation models and self-supervised pre-training. In the application part, the candidate will use the developed techniques to train specialised models for wearable-based cardiovascular risk factor prediction. In this task, the candidate will benefit from regular interaction with clinical experts from the Insel University Hospital Bern involved in the project.
