3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Energy Engineering – with a special emphasis on electro-conversion of lignin and its derivatives for bio-chemical production

Summary of PhD Program:

This is is a four-year PhD project, with financial support from the Swedish Energy Agency and the cooperation with the Umeå University. The overall aim of the project is to develop effective ionic liquids (ILs) as promoters to improve performance. Within the PhD project, we will develop a novel concept to produce bio-based aromatic chemicals and green H2 simultaneously from lignin, focusing on the anode side to lower the energy demand, where ionic liquids will be used to promote the dissolution and activation of lignin and its derivatives, nanostructured electrocatalysts (anodes) will be developed, and energy, cost, and environmental impact will be quantified, and machine learning will be used.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Cybersecurity, Secure IT/OT/IoT and Cloud Security

Summary of PhD Program:

The use of automation systems for control of production and distribution processes increases the vulnerability to the cyber threats that have become increasingly common in recent years, while cloud services are increasingly being used for these automation systems. In order to secure IT and OT environments to be maintained over time, there needs to be management systems for cyber security that cooperate with each other. In this work, we focus on experimental research concerning technical parts of cyber-secure management systems, such as network construction, network security and architecture for security, a so-called “blueprint”, which can be multiplied between different sites and organizations.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Process Metallurgy

Summary of PhD Program:

Pyrometallurgical extraction of metals generates slags, and for certain processes, the mass of slag is greater than that of the metal produced. Consequently, finding a suitable valorization route for slags is necessary for sustainable metal production from a resource efficiency standpoint. The current project aims to investigate the link between the pyrometallurgical process and the feasibility of utilizing slags as a supplementary cementitious material. By enabling this recycling route, a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from the cement industry can achieved each year. In this project, your main response parameter will be how the slag behaves as a supplementary cementitious material.
