1. Fully Funded PhD Position in translational medicine

Summary of PhD Program:

The AGE RESIST project is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation as a lead agency project and is being carried out as part of a collaboration between ETH Zurich, the California Institute of Technology (USA), EMPA and the Felix Platter Hospital in Basel. The project aims to develop a new type of sweat test to assess physical resilience in the context of biological age. This test can then be used non-invasively, independently of the laboratory and continuously using a wearable device. The long-term goal of the test is to be able to quantitatively assess how resilient/robust an individual is.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biofabrication and 3D BioPrinting

Summary of PhD Program:

The Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory (Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong) within the Department of Health Sciences & Technolgy (D-HEST) at ETHZ in Zurich, Switzerland, uses bioprinting to produce tissues which address unmet clinical needs. The laboratory has recently developed a light-based 3D printing technique, capable of creating topological cell guiding cues in large scaffolds (> centimeter scale) based on optical modulation instability effect and self-focusing effect on non-linear media (e.g., photosensitive resin).

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Rethinking Frequency Control in Power Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The existing power system operation architecture has organically grown over nearly a century, as new needs emerged, as technology and methods have advanced, and its recent development is also guided by the liberalisation of energy markets. In particular, energy balancing and frequency control nowadays rely on the classical three-level architecture of – sorted from seconds to hours – primary frequency control for stabilisation, secondary frequency control to regulate the frequency and area balancing error to a nominal value, and tertiary control to reschedule the grid operating point.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Protein Chemistry and Biocatalysis

Summary of PhD Program:

Enzyme catalysis is gaining momentum as a highly selective and sustainable strategy to synthesize pharmaceuticals, fragrance molecules, or food additives. However, biocatalysts are not adapted to the non-natural conditions to which they are exposed during reactions. Hence, they suffer from low stability which impacts their cost-efficiency.

9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Sensing and Controlling the Large-Scale Anaerobic Digestion of Human Excreta to Minimize Health Risks and Carbon Emissions

Summary of PhD Program:

Recently, the commercialisation of low-cost, modular anaerobic digesters (also known as “biogas digesters” or “biogas plants”) has increased demand for this well-established, but far from optimised, technology. Much of the interest associated with the new systems comes from the need for the methane-rich biogas, which can be used as a sustainable source of cooking fuel. Components for pressurising, storing, and burning biogas have also become plentiful. However, the resulting effluent contains harmful concentrations of pathogens and must be treated further before it is safe for handling or disposal.
