Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar to join a team of scientists from the University of Kentucky, Purdue University, and USDA Forest Service Southern and Northern Research Stations who are working on the multidisciplinary project “Turning invasive pests against themselves— protecting trees with anti-pest-specific treatments”. The team is developing and testing RNAi-based suppression of six important test cases in forest trees: 1) chestnut blight, 2) Dutch elm disease, 3) butternut canker, 4) laurel wilt, 5) emerald ash borer, and 6) invasive adelgid species. The postdoctoral scholar will join the team and work to develop RNAi targets and application methods for the control of the fungal pathogens. The work will involve a wide range of plant pathology and molecular biology techniques including identifying target genes, developing culture and in plant RNAi assays, gene expression studies, and testing off target effects.

The University Research Postdoctoral Fellowship for training individuals with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences who have plans to pursue research that will extend the reach of the ideals of community and belonging in their respective field. Applicants must be eligible to compete for federally-funded postdoctoral grants. This includes the eligibility requirement that, by the time of award, the individual must be a citizen or a non-citizen national of the United States or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence. They also must have completed the doctoral degree within the past two years, or longer with justification, or will complete the doctoral degree before the date of appointment. Summary of Postdoctoral Fellowship:
The Fellowship is targeted toward graduates who have obtained a PharmD and completed one or two years of residency training and/or have obtained a PhD, with or without postdoctoral training, in pharmaceutical sciences or pharmacy outcomes. While being mentored for a career in academia, the Fellow will have the opportunity to develop and hone teaching skills with various types of teaching experiences. They will also engage in one or more teaching and learning scholarship projects and participate on various College committees and work groups. PharmD Fellows will also have a small clinical component within the University of Kentucky Healthcare system based on their area of expertise. The Fellow will be encouraged to enroll in and complete one to two masters level education courses per semester.

Selected candidate will be expected to conduct innovative, rigorous, grant funded research and engage in scholarly activities (peer reviewed publications, presentations, etc.). Faculty member also will contribute to undergraduate teaching and behaviorally oriented training of UK medical students and research training of UK graduate students and postdoctoral scholars associated with the Divisions of Rheumatology and Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics including mentorship programs, courses, workshops, and supervised research. We are seeking one self-motivated Postdoctoral Scholar to conduct research on one or more of the following aspects: biomass feedstock characterization and conversion; bioleaching or biomining of raw materials for mineral removal/recovery; microbiology and bioreactor design; statistical and kinetic modeling. Experimental work will be conducted in our well-equipped laboratories at the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering, University of Kentucky. You will be expected to apply HPLC, GPC, TGA, GC-MS, NMR and other analytical equipment to characterize biomass raw materials, the intermediate streams and end products. You will also be expected to write manuscripts for publication and help on project reporting and grant proposals. This is a grant funded position.
