At the Department of Nordic Languages ​​there is a postgraduate subject, Nordic languages. Within this, the variation in the studies is large and can include e.g. text and conversation research, Swedish with a didactic focus (about the Swedish language in school and Swedish as a second language), language structure and historical linguistics, name research, multilingualism, neighboring languages ​​and dialects, philology and runology (for examples, see the department’s research page and ongoing dissertation projects ). 2. Fully Funded PhD Position in grid connection of renewable energy systems, with a focus on power electronics

Summary of PhD Program:

The integration of renewable energy in the electrical grid is increasing. One key difference for the grid connection of traditional electric power production such as nuclear power and hydropower, that dominate the Swedish grid, and renewable energy, is that the generator can be synchronously connected to the grid. For intermittent energy sources, such as ocean, wind and solar energy, the connection has to be made using as intermediate step with power converters. By grid connecting using power converters, the inertia from the generator is not transmitted to the grid, leading to an electrical grid more sensitive to differences in produced and consumed power, causing frequency fluctuations.

This doctoral project will be conducted within the framework of the sub-project oral statements. Within this sub-project, e.g. whether automated language analysis or human raters are best at determining whether someone is lying or telling the truth. This includes language technology and scenario-based experiments with e.g. police officers, prosecutors and judges. In addition to this, it is evaluated which features distinguish sincere and lying statements, as well as which signals human assessors use in practice. 6. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant evolution

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the PhD student will compare species from four different origins of buzz-pollinated flowers to test several general hypotheses of why buzz pollination evolves. Specific tests will include glasshouse and common garden experiments at Uppsala University but may also be extended to field localities in Sweden and abroad. The PhD student will have access to excellent plant growth facilities, flight arenas to study bee behavior, particle counters, as well as specialized equipment to study the effects of bee vibrations on flowers (e.g., accelerometers, shakers, lasers, micro-robots). The planned tests represent an ambitious and unprecedented evaluation of the evolutionary reasons for buzz pollination and will provide crucial insights into the mechanisms driving the convergent evolution of buzz-pollinated flowers.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

We hereby declare a PhD student position to be open for application. The PhD-studies will focus on the investigation of the diffusion properties of volatile elements such as Xe, Kr, I and Cs, in a range of different nuclear-fuel types, under a range of thermal conditions. The core of the methodology, by which this will be achieved, is ion-implantation of the volatiles in unirradiated nuclear-fuel followed by elemental depth-profiling with ToF-ERDA (Time-of-Flight – Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis) recoil detection analysis. Fuel samples will then be annealed and the effect of the annealing assessed by additional depth profiling. These general procedures will be further supported by a range of other material categorisation techniques, which will provide correlated information on changes in the microstructure of the samples.
