1. Fully Funded PhD Position in computational chemistry
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD project will deal with development and application of novel, accurate approaches for the study of functional catalytic compounds. A possible direction of the project is the development of advanced dynamic approaches for detailed and realistic study of reaction mechanisms and reaction networks considering in a sophisticated manner environmental effects (also under catalytic conditions). This can include the development of advanced enhanced sampling and machine learning approaches.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Population Genomics and Linguistic Evolution
Summary of PhD Program:
The NCCR Evolving Language (www.evolvinglanguage.ch) invites applications for a PhD student in population genomics and linguistic evolution to study human language diversification from the viewpoints of the spread of humans and cultural (archaeological and ethnographical traits) at the Department of Evolutionary Anthropology, University of Zurich.
The NCCR is a Swiss National Center of Competence in Research with the goal of creating a new discipline, Evolutionary Language Science, that targets the past and future of language. The center consists of leading scientists from traditionally separated academic domains, which allows us to harvest the diverse expertise from the humanities, social sciences, computational sciences, natural sciences and medicine towards a broadscale interdisciplinary collaboration.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Approaches to Affect in Social Decision Making
Summary of PhD Program:
The Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research (Group Leaders: E. Fehr, T. Hare, C. Ruff, P. Tobler) is a research center at the University of Zurich that investigates the principles underlying social and neuronal systems (Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research (SNS Lab)). The lab brings together scientists from the social and natural sciences (incl. neuroscience, economics, psychology, computer science, and physics) to study mechanistic links between neuronal circuits, human behavior and social interactions, using a combination of brain imaging methods, neuro-modulation techniques (brain stimulation and neuropharmacology), behavioral experiments and computational approaches.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
4. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The project aims to analyse the known Homo erectus skeletons using advanced virtual imaging techniques and modern reference samples to explore aspects such as evolutionary changes in body proportions and growth trajectories, skeletal development, pathology, and biomechanical adaptations in response to bipedalism. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to collect data abroad and present their findings at international conferences, as well as to collaborate in other projects of the group. In addition, they will assist in teaching as well as in training and mentoring of students.
Application Deadline: September 30, 2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theological Ethics
Summary of PhD Program:
The research cluster “Conspiracy Theories in Online Environments and Their Religious Connotations,” will commence on Jan 1st 2025 as one of four subareas of the URPP. It deals with the influence of digitalization on the dynamics of conspiracy-theoretical communication in digital spaces and with the relationship between digitality, religion, and conspiracy theories, drawing on the perspectives of the study of religion, linguistics, and ethics.
Application Deadline: Oct 20th 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Theological Ethics
Summary of PhD Program:
The research cluster “Conspiracy Theories in Online Environments and Their Religious Connotations”, which will run from January 1, 2025, is one of four sub-areas of the URPP and deals with the influence of digitalization on the dynamics of conspiracy theory communication in the digital space as well as with determining the relationship between digitality, religion and conspiracy theories from a religious studies, linguistics and ethical perspective.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Global Mapping of Antimicrobial Resistance in Animals and Access to Veterinary Services
Summary of PhD Program:
The Epidemiology and Geography Group at the One Health Institute, University of Zurich, is looking for a PhD candidate interested in developing geospatial models to map antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals as well as accessibility to veterinary services worldwide. The position is for four years. The One Health Institute (OHI) is an interfaculty institute founded jointly by the Vetsuisse Faculty, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Science at the University of Zurich. The Epidemiology and Geography group focuses on assembling large databases and developing methods to map infectious diseases. Our primary interest is on mapping antimicrobial resistance in low- and middle-income countries.
Application Deadline: October 15th 2024
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in input features in first language acquisition
Summary of PhD Program:
The NCCR Evolving Language (www.evolvinglanguage.ch) invites applications for a PhD position in an interdisciplinary project on the evolution of languages, their structures, and usage patterns over time and space, and under diverse social and population-historical conditions. The successful applicant will work in a project focusing on input features in child-directed speech comparing neurotypical and autistic children.
Application Deadline: October 1, 2024
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Religious Studies
Summary of PhD Program:
As part of the strategic focus of the University of Zurich, the interdisciplinary University Research Priority Program (URPP) “Digital Religion(s)” investigates from 2021 to 2032 how current digitalization dynamics influence, shape, and transform religious practices in various social contexts. The research specifically examines how individual and institutional actors communicate religiously in hybrid online-offline formats and assert their public claim to societal orientation.
The cluster “Conspiracy Theories in Online Environments and Their Religious Connotations”, starting on January 1 2025, as one of four sub-areas of the URPP, addresses the impact of digitalization on the dynamics of conspiracy theory communication in digital spaces, as well as the relationship between religion, digitality, and conspiracy theories from religious studies, linguistic, and ethical perspectives.
Application Deadline: October 31, 2024
10. Fully Funded PhD Position in religious studies
Summary of PhD Program:
The project “Exploring the Digital in Conspiracy Theories with Religious Elements” (project management: Dorothea Lüddeckens and Mira Menzfeld), which belongs to this cluster, deals with the question: How are conspiracy theories (non-)digitally created and perpetuated – and what effects do they have on the lives and actions of those who adhere to them?
For this project, we are looking for a doctoral student who, on the basis of online and offline field research, will answer the above question using an example for a case of their own choosing. A doctoral project that, in addition to being focused on the project topic, is also characterized by a reference to Islam is desirable, but not mandatory.
Application Deadline: October 31, 2024
