1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biostatistics
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a PhD student to work on the project “Evidence synthesis methods to predict personalized treatment effects” at the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM), in the University of Bern. This is a four-year project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The overarching aim of the project is to develop new statistical methods for tailoring the choice of treatment to the individual characteristics, needs, and preferences of patients.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Plant Physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
A PhD position is available at the University of Bern (Switzerland). The research project aims at determining the role of organic nitrogen (N) for plant performance. There is increasing evidence that plants not only use ammonium or nitrate as N source, but also acquire organic N, e.g. amino acids and small peptides, from the soil. It remains however unclear how much the direct uptake of organic nitrogen contributes to plant nitrogen needs. Our research contributes to increase knowledge on the uptake and reallocation of organic N in plants by exploring Arabidopsis accessions with altered regulation of organic N utilisation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Satellite Geodesy
Summary of PhD Program:
The satellite geodesy research group of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Bern (AIUB) offers two positions for PhD CANDIDATES. The reliable and stable realization of the terrestrial reference frame is an essential task in the global geodesy because it forms the basis for monitoring the system Earth. In a new joint project between the Deutsches Geodätisches Forschungsinstitut of the Technical University of Munich (DGFI-TUM) and AIUB we are targeting to improve in particular the scale realization in future ITRF solutions. This is in particular important for many applications, such as the measurement of the rise in sea levels.
Application Deadline: December 20, 2024
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in business administration (Operations Research)
Summary of PhD Program:
The University of Bern is one of the 150 best universities in the world. The professorship for quantitative methods in business administration represents the areas of operations research, analytics and operations management in research and teaching at the Department of Business Administration. We are filling a doctoral and assistant position as of February 1, 2025 or by arrangement. The aim of the research is to develop methods of operations research for use in project management.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Orbit & Gravity Field Recovery
Summary of PhD Program:
The main focus of the Ph.D. position will be on orbit and gravity field recovery using the GNSS data of the zenith-looking antennas of the Spire Global satellite constellation and further scientific LEO missions and the development of optimal combination schemes to improve the re-covery of the very long-wavelength part of the Earth’s time-variable gravity field from normal equations that are based on kinematic positions stemming from satellites at different altitudes and providing GNSS data of inhomogeneous quality.
Application Deadline: December 22 , 2024
6. 02 Fully Funded PhD Position in plant ancient DNA research
Summary of PhD Program:
As a PhD student you will study forest responses to climate change using innovative paleoecological and paleogenomic methods. The position involves fieldwork such as lake sediment coring in the European Alps, microscopic analyses of pollen and macrofossils, the extraction of ancient DNA in a designated laboratory, and the analysis of paleogenetic data using advanced bioinformatic tools to assess shifts in genetic diversity and identify adaptive genetic traits. The project offers the opportunity to work on the forefront of the rapidly developing field of ancient DNA research and provides an inspiring and interdisciplinary environment for Early Career Scientists.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Pharmaceutical Technology, Lipid-based systems for the Local Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis
Summary of PhD Program:
We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our research team in the field of drug delivery, focusing on the development of lipid-based systems for targeted drug delivery to inflamed colonic tissue. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on a project that combines materials science, advanced drug delivery techniques and in vivo studies aimed at improving therapies for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The candidate will gain experience in both in vitro and in vivo experiments, contributing to this translational research.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
8. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
In our recent paper (https://rdcu.be/dYS4q), we documented important limitations of the available tools for signature analysis. We are now looking for applicants who will develop new algorithms specifically designed to overcome the identified shortcomings. These algorithms will be implemented as software packages that will improve and simplify the analysis of mutational signatures for the broad community of researchers and other practitioners. This will help to effectively use the costly sequencing data and thus enable discoveries and therapeutic decisions that would otherwise be impossible.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled
9. Fully Funded PhD Position in Organs-on-Chip
Summary of PhD Program:
We are an interdisciplinary research group, the Organs-on-Chip Technologies (OOC) Lab of the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research at the University of Bern. We focus on the development of advanced in-vitro models by combining engineering, microfluidics, microtechnologies, material sciences and cell biology (see references (1-3)). You have a solid background in theoretical and experimental microfluidics, engineering, and ideally, convincing cell culture experience. If you are passionate about developing innovative in vitro models to replace animal testing, enjoy pioneering unique microfabrication techniques, and have an interest in laboratory automation, we’d love to hear from you.

10. Fully Funded PhD Position in Exoplanet Atmospheres
Summary of PhD Program:
The group of Daniel Kitzmann focuses on the development of new radiative transfer and chemistry models to interpret observations of exoplanet atmospheres, including high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy and JWST. The group of Jens Hoeijmakers focuses on carrying out observations of exoplanet atmospheres, especially high-resolution ground-based spectroscopy of ultra-hot Jupiters. The two groups work together to enable faster, more efficient and more robust interpretations of new and upcoming observations of the atmospheres of hot gas giants as well as smaller, cooler exoplanets.
