1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Ophthalmology
Summary of PhD Program:
The Department of Ophthalmology at the Inselspital is a leading center for state-of-the-art diagnostics, therapy and microsurgery of eye diseases and ophthalmologic emergencies and scientifically associated with the Department for Biomedical Research (DBMR) at the University of Bern.
The research group Retinal Remodeling (Prof. Dr. Volker Enzmann) focuses on the employment of Müller cells, the main macroglia in the retina, as potential candidates for replacing degenerated photoreceptors. Thereby, we investigating the active modulation of Müller cell transition as a pivotal process during degeneration/regeneration and the treatment of the chronic gliosis in mice with anti-fibrotic drugs as we found similarities to wound healing (fibrosis). Additionally, we have established a human retinal organoid degeneration model where we want to model photoreceptor and glial pathologies to study the role of Müller cell response.

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Veterinary Physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
The Veterinary Physiology Group at the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Bern is an internationally recognized group that conducts very successful research in the field of mammary gland physiology of dairy cows. The most important research topics include the endocrine control of lactation, the adaptation of metabolism and the immune system. In addition, colostrum formation, the health of dairy cows and newborn calves, and the interactions between animals and technology are key topics.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mathematical Modeling – Women’s Physiology
Summary of PhD Program:
A PhD position is available in the Technology-Enabled Precision Medicine for Metabolic Disorders (PrecisionLab) group led by Prof. Jose Garcia-Tirado and co-supervised by Prof. Lia Bally (Metabolic Physiology Lab) at the Department of Diabetes, Endocrinology, Nutritional Medicine, and Metabolism (UDEM), University Hospital Bern and University of Bern. We seek an enthusiastic candidate who will contribute to digital twin technologies to simulate/predict physiologic variables and generate actionable advice to promote cardiometabolic health in women across the life course. This approach will help understand the potential impact of lifestyle changes, treatments, or medications on a given person through simulation and consideration of female-specific needs.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in The motor activity – subjective energy (MASE) project: Neurobiological and digital phenotyping towards digital mental health interventions in depression
Summary of PhD Program:
MASE is an ERA-NET NEURON-funded (supported by SNSF in Switzerland) project which will set the basis towards evidence-based, tailored and expedient mental health interventions fostering primary and secondary prevention. Its multidisciplinary consortium of 5 European partners aims to: a) apply brain network analyses to identify types of brains likely to profit from activity subjective energy association (ASEA); (b) use artificial intelligence to identify where and when nonexercise activity helps people with certain brain properties; (c) conduct an experimental study to test if the intervention suggestions found in step (a) and (b) really work out in everyday life; and (d) develop and design a smartphone app that delivers ASEA interventions and provides suggestions when and where to engage in which short nonexercise activity to maximize participation rates.
Application Deadline: 30.09.2024
5. Fully Funded PhD Position
Summary of PhD Program:
The project investigates the effects of an online training in the recognition of non-verbally expressed emotions on social attention, emotional reactivity and effectiveness in interpersonal interactions. The doctorate focuses on the effects of the training on face-to-face communication between medical students and patients, e.g. on non-verbal and verbal behavior. The position also includes teaching support in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in psychology (e.g. supervision of theses).
Application Deadline: 22 September 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Islamic/Middle Eastern Studies
Summary of PhD Program:
The PhD student will join the research team of the SNSF Starting Grant Project, “TraIL: Tracing Labour in Islamicate Legal Traditions.” The project began in March 2024 and will run for 60 months.
TraIL aims to provide cutting-edge research on the legal history of labour in Islamicate societies, diversifying our understanding of labour through textual and digital methods of analysis. The focus will be on the intersection of labour and gender in Islamic legal traditions across a long historical span (from the 10th to the 20th century). The geographical focus will be on Egypt and the region of Bilād al-Shām (Greater Syria, which corresponds to modern Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Palestine).
