1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Media and Culture Studies
Summary of PhD Program:
The RESPIRE project focuses on how planet Earth breathes and suffocates at the current socio-political-environmental conjuncture. Breathing and suffocation are understood not as metaphors but as material processes of contemporary multispecies living and dying on this planet. RESPIRE explores their political dimensions by examining how power relations, climate change, and socio-environmental injustices are interconnected through the practice of planetary breathing. By addressing “planetary lungs” such as forests, oceans, and soil, RESPIRE investigates the crises of deforestation, oceanic dead zones, and peatland destruction as forms of multispecies breathing and suffocation.
Application Deadline: 19 January 2025
2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Marketing and Consumer Behaviour: Technostress and Emerging Technologies
Summary of PhD Program:
The focus of your research will be on understanding how new technologies (e.g., genAI) affect technostress and coping mechanisms and how that influences user decision-making and behaviour. You will be addressing technostress in business to consumer as well as business to business applications. You will investigate key stressors such as interface complexity and content overload and explore proactive (e.g., onboarding tutorials) and reactive (e.g., troubleshooting support) coping mechanisms.
Application Deadline: 8 January 2025

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Debris Flow – Vegetation Interactions
Summary of PhD Program:
Debris flows are fast-moving landslides that can devastate people and property. In many regions they interact strongly with vegetation, but how this reduces their hazardous impact is surprisingly poorly understood. This critically limits the design of protection forests, as well as anticipation of effects of climate change, wildfires, and deforestation on debris-flow hazards. We currently lack tools to systematically and quantitatively study these interactions. Here we will develop new experimental techniques, wherein we mimic vegetation with small-scale 3D-printed trees and live seedlings, which design will be based on field data.
Application Deadline: 6 January 2025
4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Microbiome-Driven Crop Nutrition
Summary of PhD Program:
With the pressing need to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, this PhD project explores the microbial interplay between sulfur and nitrogen metabolism in crops like soybean. By utilising advanced metagenomics, transcriptomics, and elemental analysis, the project aims to identify plant-microbe regulatory networks that enhance crop nutrition and resilience. Benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and a vibrant scientific community at Utrecht University.
Application Deadline: 15 January 2025
5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Multiphoton Printing for Biofabrication
Summary of PhD Program:
You will become a member of the research groups Malda and Levato research groups within the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht. In particular, you will contribute to the development and assembly of a novel multiphoton printing device, and will develop technological solution to converge light based printing approaches with other bioprinting techniques (including volumetric bioprinting and melt electrowriting). You will use this versatile set-up to produce complex 3D tissues, such as advanced in vitro models for cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues.
Application Deadline: 15 December 2024
6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Empowering regenerative agriculture
Summary of PhD Program:
This interdisciplinary PhD research project aims to explore the conditions under which farm businesses are empowered to transition to regenerative agriculture, as well as to interrogate the role of existing regenerative agriculture schemes and key, but often overlooked food system actors (among which farmer organisations, banks, advisors and insurance companies, and suppliers) to (dis)empower farm businesses. This PhD project will advance a conceptualisation of empowerment in transitions to regenerative agriculture, and investigate empirically to what extent and how different agrifood governance arrangements and food system actors (dis)empower farm businesses.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Data Diversity for Fair and Robust NLP (DataDivers project)
Summary of PhD Program:
The rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the availability of massive datasets have sparked a revolution in the field of NLP. However, numerous studies have pointed towards serious flaws: NLP models encode societal biases and show disparate performance across demographic groups. Thus, current models can and do cause real harm when deployed in society.
Application Deadline: 5 January 2025
8. Fully Funded PhD Position in Coastal Adaptation to Sea-Level Rise
Summary of PhD Program:
How many Wadden Islands will still exist in 2100? The answer to this question depends not only on sea-level rise scenarios, but also on our ability to design clever adaptation strategies that can prolong the lifetime of barrier islands such as the Wadden Islands. Many examples exist of successful coastal adaptation to sea-level rise, but it is not yet clear how these can be scaled up, and if there are physical limitations to their effectiveness, on a landscape scale.
