1. Fully Funded PhD Position in structural modeling for extra-large wind turbines

Summary of PhD Program:

The MSCA Doctoral Network covers 4 key research aspects: 1) wind characteristics and resources, 2) aerodynamics, 3) structures, and 4) aeroelasticity. Twelve fellows will undertake individual projects in these areas. All the research questions in the project reflect industry needs. Academic novelty and innovation will be reflected in the methodologies and solutions. The research results will be disseminated directly to the public and scientific community. 2. Fully Funded PhD Position in seafood and sustainability

Summary of PhD Program:

Over time, IMR has built up a large database (Seafood data) on the content of nutrients and contaminants in various seafood. The aim of this project is to develop quantitative and qualitative parameters related to different sustainability dimensions that can supplement data on safe and healthy food with indicators of relevance. The project is a pioneering project at IMR, where collaboration with various professional groups and research fields, both internally at IMR and UiB, but also in collaboration with others, is essential.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Fish Immunology 

Summary of PhD Program:

Viral diseases present as great a challenge to fish as to humans – and it is difficult to make efficient vaccines protecting against viral diseases whether for humans or fish. Farmed fish are at particular risk for viral diseases due to intensive rearing practices and high stocking densities. More effective vaccines than those currently available can contribute to reduced mortality among the fish and thus contribute to several of the UN’s sustainability goals, including goal no. 2 which is to eradicate hunger. In this PhD project, we will develop an mRNA vaccine for salmon.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in physical oceanography

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project will focus on Ice Shelf Water (ISW) and ocean properties and currents just north of the floating ice shelf called Fimbulisen. This is also where the Norwegian research base Troll is located, and some of the activity will take place related to the annual cruises used to supply the base every Antarctic summer. The PhD will focus on processes in front of the ice shelf and under land-fast sea ice through detailed measurements of ISW outflows, frazil ice crystals and platelet ice. High-resolution in situ measurements of ice crystals and water column properties are planned, but detection of supercooled waters is challenging. Suspended ice crystals can be detected in standard water samples and may be compared to new acoustic sensing methods.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Deep Sea Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The WormFEST project aims to investigate the community composition, biodiversity and ecosystem functioning of Arctic worm forests. The successful candidate will compare worm forest communities across vents and seeps and explore the ecosystem functioning of the worm forest community by combining food web reconstruction using stable isotopes, and functional trait analyses. As part of the research activities of the Deep-Sea Biology research group, the candidate may get the opportunity to participate on research cruises to the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridges. Food-web and biological traits analyses will be performed in collaboration with researchers at the University of Aveiro (Portugal), and it might be possible for the student to travel to Aveiro to get additional training.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in high-resolution sedimentary dynamics of rifts during rapid climate change

Summary of PhD Program:

This PhD project aims to investigate the stratigraphic signature of rift basins with respect to the role of short-term (<100 kyr) climate change on syn-rift depositionalsystems orthe coupling between climate-driven changes in surface processes (erosion/sediment supply) and rift deformation. The initial objective is to analyse the sedimentology and stratigraphy of an active rift where it is possible to constrain tectonic and climatic controls at high resolution, and where the sediment source areas are still preserved, such as the Corinth Rift, Greece.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in reservoir physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD Research Fellow will be involved in the EU-funded project HyDRA – Diagnostic Tools and Risk Protocols to Accelerate Underground Hydrogen Storage. This project aims to perform research on and characterize microbial interactions in various European storage sites to assess potential risks during UHS. The HyDRA consortium has 9 international research partners and over 10 energy companies as partners. The PhD candidate will work in an interdisciplinary research team, focusing on using multiscale experimental methods to study microbial activity and biogeochemical reactions under dynamic hydrogen flow.
