2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Occupant-centric flexibility quantification and dispatch

Summary of PhD Program:

In the framework of MSCA DN CoDEF project, we are looking for a motivated and experienced PhD candidate to perform occupant-centric flexibility analysis. A particular focus lies on the quantification and dispatch of flexibility to support energy system operation. Challenges encompass – among others -, modeling physical systems and stochastic human behaviors. Historical data in the Empa’s NEST demonstrator and its inhouse digital twin will be utilized to quantification and dispatch flexibility.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in investigate the Impact of Consumer Flexibility on planning of multi-energy districts

Summary of PhD Program:

In the framework of MSCA Doctoral Network (DN) Consumer Energy Demand Flexibility in Electricity Use (CoDEF) project, we are looking for a motivated and experienced PhD candidate to perform consumer flexibility aware planning of multi-energy districts. A particular focus lies on the modelling and optimization of multi-energy consumer flexibility to estimate its contribution on system sizing, demand reduction and security of supply. Challenges encompass – among others -, multi-energy system design and integration. Historical data in the Empa’s NEST demonstrator and its multi-energy backbone will be utilized to design multi-energy districts.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Personalized Comfort Systems

Summary of PhD Program:

The personalized comfort systems (PCS) can reduce energy use in buildings by targeted microclimatization of the occupants rather than conditioning the entire space. This project aims to develop a holistic approach to the energy performance of a wide range of PCS types considering all 3 levels of human body comfort, local conditioning system in PCS, and building system. The aim of this proposed PhD project is to characterize the effectiveness of personal thermal comfort systems via a detailed analysis of heat transfer between the PCS and the human body using computational and experimental methods.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Integrated planning and operation of energy systems

Summary of PhD Program:

In the framework of NCCR Automation, we are looking for a motivated doctoral student to investigate and develop methods which target energy system design and operation jointly. To date, the traditional methods of planning and operating energy systems have been mostly separated e.g., where planning procedures only consider an idealized operational stage and vice versa. A particular focus of our novel approach lies on investigating bi-level optimization and/or diffusing timescale methods which serve as candidates for energy system related applications. Challenges encompass – among others – harmonizing the differing design and control objectives, bridge the differing time-scales of interest and comparing and contrasting candidate approaches.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in further development and validation of a novel sensor selection methodology for autonomous driving applications

Summary of PhD Program:

The Chemical Energy Carriers and Vehicles Systems Laboratory researches future energy and mobility concepts with reduced climate and environmental impact. We develop new technical solutions in close contact with science and industry. To strengthen the activities in the research topic “Vehicle Systems” we are looking for a PhD student.

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in Nanocomposites for thermal management

Summary of PhD Program:

The aim of the PhD project is to elaborate methodologies for thermal conductivity measurements of submicron- and nano-scaled metallic composites, and to apply these methodologies in the development of new-generation materials for thermal management, for example in power electronics. State-of-the-art methods for the determination of thermal conductivity will be compared, and their suitability for the determination of thermal conductivity of newly-developed fine-structured Cu-Mo composites will be evaluated.
