1. Fully Funded PhD Position in structural virology and immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the PhD candidate will investigate structural details of the host cell entry of several viruses that possess an elevated pandemic potential. The candidate will use a systematic approach to uncover structural and mechanistic insights that are crucial for guiding the development of effective vaccines and antiviral treatments. The project involves extensive cryo-EM studies of viral proteins with and without inhibitors, computational structural biology to improve inhibitors, and – to a smaller extent – protein biochemistry and virological wet lab methods. The PhD candidate is expected to take a strong lead in the analysis and interpretation of the results and requires a creative approach to immunology and protein biochemistry to design novel antivirals.

Application Deadline: 27.Sep.2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in infection and immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD studies will be conducted in Assoc. Prof. Susanna Brighenti’s research group at ANA Futura, KI Campus Flemingsberg. The research performed in the laboratory of Assoc. Prof. S. Brighenti involves studies on the pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection, the causative agent of tuberculosis (TB). The group has a focus to study immune responses at the site of infection eg. in the lung or lymph nodes, compared to peripheral blood using advanced cellular and molecular techniques. For this work, the group has collected unique clinical materials from TB infected patients and controls and also established relevant in vitro infection models with virulent Mtb strains and human cells. Majority of the work is conducted in a high-containment biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Virology and Immunology

Summary of PhD Program:

In this project, the doctoral student will produce experimental mRNA vaccines and evaluate them in mouse models. A major research focus will be on the immune response to vaccine “cocktails” that deliver multiple strains either together or sequentially. Additionally, the student will characterize mechanisms of translational enhancement by different viruses, and work on adapting these to improve mRNA delivery for vaccines and therapeutics. The student will be expected to be self-motivated and drive the aims of the project forward, performing the experiments, analyzing and synthesizing the results, and presenting the findings. Eventually, the student will be expected to take a leading role in the design of new experiments and the writing of scientific manuscripts.

Application Deadline: 10.Sep.2024

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in organizational and social work environment and mental illness in the construction industry

Summary of PhD Program:

The Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute within the broadly defined field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts advanced research in environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology and biostatistics with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and what interaction there is with genes. IMM is also a national expert body in environmental medicine and IMM’s researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers and participate in national and international expert groups.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in reproductive sciences

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student is expected to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD that focuses on studies related to identifying non-invasive marker for good quality embryos; cellular and molecular aspects of endometrial regeneration and the link with endometriosis and endometriosis associated ovarian cancer. The student will be offered opportunity to attain theoretical knowledgebase in embryo grading, endometriosis, endometrial cell biology and its regeneration. This research project involves deciphering molecular markers, identify cell types, its niches and molecular network involved in different biological processes from the data obtained from smartse2/smartseq 3 and spatial transcriptomics.

6. Fully Funded PhD Position in Epigenetics of inflammatory type 2 diabetes

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a highly motivated and self-driven doctoral student with a keen interest in identifying novel epigenetic mechanisms and alterations linked to inflammation in the context of type 2 diabetes. The doctoral project aims to identify functional alterations of enhancers and silencers (currently understudied) linked to gene expression in human monocytes (a major source of inflammatory mediators). The student will investigate whether the cause of such alterations is genetic (e.g. SNPs), epigenetic (e.g. microenvironment-dependent chromatin modifications and 3D organization), or both (e.g. SNPs affecting a transcription factor or chromatin-modifying cofactor to facilitate genetic-epigenetic crosstalk).

7. Fully Funded PhD Position in heart failure

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD student, under the leadership of the main supervisor Associate Professor Gianluigi Savarese and the cosupervisors Prof Lars Lund and dr. Felix Lindberg, will contribute to develop and execute several registry-based studies related to the prognostic role of the implementation of guidelines-directed medical treatments in daily clinical practice. The PhD student, with the support of the supervisors, will prepare the study protocols and all statistical analysis plans, perform the statistical analyses, draft the manuscripts and perform necessary revisions. Moreover, a plan for participation in doctoral courses and credited activities will be done with the supervisors, to make sure that all deadlines are met and necessary credits are obtained.
