The goal of this PhD is to develop epidemic forecasts for marine invasive species in European coastal waters by creating models of species distribution and connectivity based on data streams from eco-genomic and camera-based sensor systems. This “sensor-to-modelling” framework has the potential to be further developed into biological forecasts for rare, endangered, commercial, or ecological keystone species. The ultimate purpose of the simulations is to understand and predict the complex biological responses of marine ecosystems to environmental pressures and offer a test bed for simulating management scenarios. 3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Correlative Nanoscale Imaging of Molecular Turnover in Neuronal Stem Cells
Summary of PhD Program:
The subject of the PhD position is development of a multiple correlative nanoscale imaging allowing the correlation of organization and turnover of proteins and molecular lipids, localization of protein complexes and organelles, and cellular morphology at the subcellular level. The method is then applied to study the molecular and organelle turnover in neuronal stem cells during the cell differentiation. The goals are to obtain multiple properties of the same cell sample with a subcellular precision across different imaging techniques, and to understand the molecular regulation during neuronal stem cell differentiation and proliferation.

Stroke, the second leading cause of death and third cause of disability, accounted for 5.7% of global Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) in 2019 and caused 6.55 million deaths. Despite decreasing incidence and mortality rates, the absolute number of stroke cases has risen. Diabetes significantly increases stroke risk, with diabetic individuals facing twice the risk compared to non-diabetics. Stroke is responsible for about 20% of deaths in the diabetic population. The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1990 and is expected to increase further, necessitating targeted efforts to reduce stroke risk in this high-risk group. Research on diabetes medications like SGLT2 inhibitors, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and DPP-4 inhibitors shows mixed results regarding their impact on stroke risk.
