1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Experimental Physics with focus on Space Physics

Summary of PhD Program:

The Earth is constantly losing parts of its atmosphere by its upper part being ionized and partially lost into space. To better understand this atmospheric escape, we must first get a better understanding of the plasma transport in Earth’s magnetotail. The ‘Magnetospheric Space Plasma Group’ at Umeå University is therefore looking for a brilliant PhD candidate interested in performing research on the transport of heavy ions (He+, He++, O+) in Earth’s magnetotail, using observed data from the ESA Cluster and the NASA MMS multi-spacecraft missions.

Application Deadline: 2025-02-16

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in plant science with a focus on cell wall dynamics

Summary of PhD Program:

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join the “Watchers on the Wall” project, which investigates the crucial role of plant cell walls in the early stages of immune responses. Your research will focus on uncovering the connection between changes in cell wall mechanics/composition and the activation of plant defense pathways.

You will employ cutting-edge Brillouin-Raman microscopy to monitor real-time, in vivo alterations in cell walls in response to diverse immune elicitors. Building on this, you will develop a chemo-optogenetic toolkit to precisely control cell wall degrading enzymes, enabling you to simulate specific cell wall perturbations and study their impact on signaling cascades.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Molecular Biology

Summary of PhD Program:

The project investigates bi-directional communication between the nervous system and the microbiota in the skin of zebrafish. Topics of particular interest include the role of chemosensory cells in detecting and regulating the microbiota, and mechanisms by which these cells alter host behaviour. A person who is employed as a PhD student shall primarily devote his-/or herself to his/her own education. The project and research environment will give the dedicated student the opportunity to train as a first-class researcher.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Computational Science and Engineering with focus on digital physics and machine learning

Summary of PhD Program:

The doctoral project explores techniques for creating hybrid models that combine physics-based models and numerical solvers with deep learning, as well as novel ways of embedding these models in the systems for motion planning and control of robots and machines. The systems are thereby made aware of physics, which aims to make them safer and better at adapting to sudden changes in the environment. The project focuses in particular on the physics of mobile machines operating in rough and deformable terrain, equipped with manipulators for digging and loading granular materials and objects.

5. Fully Funded PhD Position in Mitochondrial Protein Quality Control during Ageing

Summary of PhD Program:

The PhD project in the lab of Andreas Kohler focuses on the quality control of mitochondrially-encoded proteins. Mitochondria are vital cellular organelles originating as endosymbionts and hence, containing their own genome. Encoded proteins are major building blocks of the respiratory chain, important for cellular energy homeostasis and thus, for cellular functionality. To maintain cellular health during ageing, protein quality control (PQC) of mitochondrial proteins is essential. Although we have a growing understanding of how PQC of proteins encoded by nuclear DNA works, PQC mechanisms of mitochondrially-encoded proteins remain elusive. Our research aims to decipher the molecular principles of these PQC mechanisms in health, age, and disease by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as major model systems.
