1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Development of layered positive electrode materials for Na-ion and Na-solid state batteries

Summary of PhD Program:

We are looking for a PhD student (m/f/d) motivated to work on the development of positive electrode materials. The PhD deals with the synthesis and characterization (structural, electronic, electrochemical) of novel Na-based cathode materials with a layered structure. These are inorganic compounds that should possess several properties including high specific capacity, high working potential and fast Na+ diffusion. Moreover, the materials need to be stable during cycling and as stable as possible in the atmosphere.

Application Deadline: 30 June 2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Physics of living matter

Summary of PhD Program:

Our research is focused on elucidating and quantifying physico-chemical principles of dynamic self-organization and transport processes in soft and living matter on different length and time scales. This includes, for example, anomalous diffusion processes in crowded media far away from thermal equilibrium, the formation and homeostasis of cellular organelles, or the dynamic self-organization and migration of cells in structured environments and during embryogenesis. To this end, we mainly employ and develop advanced light microscopy methods (e.g. lightsheet microscopes) and microfluidics, complemented by custom-made software tools for analysis and simulation.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in fundamental turbulence research

Summary of PhD Program:

Turbulence is ubiquitous in nature and technology. Yet, developing theories of turbulence, which ultimately all modeling applications rely on, remains an outstanding scientific challenge. The goal of the EU-funded project UniTED is to combine theory and new computational approaches to tackle this long-standing problem and enhance our fundamental understanding of highly turbulent flows.

4. Fully Funded PhD Position in Decentralized Machine Learning

Summary of PhD Program:

Machine learning (ML) has enabled a breakthrough in the development of artificial intelligence in recent years. Centralized ML systems collect large amounts of data, e.g. from the Internet, and use it to train their models (see ChatGPT, LLAMA, etc.). However, only data that is publicly accessible can flow into the models. In many areas, data protection prevents data access, e.g. for medical and other personal data. To make such private data usable for model training, decentralized machine learning (also known as “federated learning”) relies on leaving the data with the data sources (the “clients”).
