1. Fully Funded PhD Position in Biomedical Optics

Summary of PhD Program:

For this project, we are looking for three PhD students who will work on optical system development, novel catheter designs, data processing algorithms, and modeling of scattering and polarization properties of tissue, with the goal of bringing these technologies to patient care. The research will be conducted at the VU University in Amsterdam. The candidate will be part of the PhD program of the Biophotonics & Medical Imaging section under the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. J.F. de Boer, an internationally recognised leader in the field of Biophotonics (www.deboer.one).

Application Deadline: 29-11-2024

2. Fully Funded PhD Position in Quantum Logic Spectroscopy – Precision measurements of trapped H2+ ions

Summary of PhD Program:

This project aims to measure the level structure of weakly-bound molecular states of H2+ with unprecedented accuracy using novel quantum technologies. These transitions in the microwave and THz range are particularly sensitive to the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mp/me) and exotic spin-dependent interactions. For this, you will be involved in developing a novel cryogenic ion trap for quantum-logic spectroscopy using H2+ (spectroscopy) and Be+ (logic) ions. You will develop a continuous-wave laser system at 313nm to laser cool Be+ ions, which are then used for sympathetic cooling of the molecular ions.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Particulate Air Quality

Summary of PhD Program:

TNO has developed the LOTOS-EUROS Air Quality model for simulating gaseous and aerosol pollutants. This model is evaluated with surface concentration measurements but measurement sites tend to be far apart. In this job, you will work on evaluating and improving LOTOS-EUROS with satellite measurements that provide a more integrated spatial picture. You will use the latest satellite measurements from new ESA and NASA missions like EarthCARE and PACE, that the Dutch science community is very much involved in. These missions are capable of measuring the vertical profile of aerosols, and contain information on particle sizes, shapes and chemical composition, representing a major leap in the knowledge that we obtain from spaceborne instruments.
